The Sound that Failed to Reach Them (Oneshot)
To most people it's simple, just an average everyday thing. But to me and my friends, it's everything.
I lost my parents when I was 13. Keeping it a secret from my friends, I lived on- and then the auditions flyer came. Crypton Future Media, a big music company, was holding auditions for a singing group they wanted to produce. There would only be six winners chosen.
On the Saturday of the audition, I took the train to the big music theater in the next town. It seemed like so many people were in there...
I bumped into two people as soon as I got inside. I recognized both from school- outgoing, energetic Rin Kagamine and dirty-minded Len.
"Hi Rin!" I called. "Sorry for bumping into you guys, I'm just so nervous!"
She grinned at me. "Don't worry! I'm sure you'll do great!"
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a group of older girls talking. The pink-haired one suddenly turned red and dashed off. I could see tears running down her cheeks. She wasn't looking where she was going and crashed into the boy and girl standing beside me, knocking all of us to the floor. They were all older, looking about college-aged. The boy, who had sapphire blue hair and beautiful blue eyes, immediately helped the pinkette up. The other girl, who had short brown hair and brown eyes, turned to me. "Sorry about that," she said in a clear, pretty voice. She helped me up easily. "My name's Meiko. Yours?" she asked.
"Nice to meet you, Meiko-san. I'm Hatsune Miku," I replied.
"Cool name. This idiot right here"-she grabbed the blue-haired boy-"is my friend Kaito."
"Hiya!" Kaito said cheerily. He had an oddly cute voice for his age.
"Nice to meet you all. I'm Megurine Luka," the pinkette said in a soft, mature voice.
"Hey Miku! Don't make friends without us!" Rin called, coming over with Len right behind. "Hi! I'm Rin Kagamine, and this is my brother Len!"
The three older ones smiled, then introduced themselves to the Kagamines.
"You know what we should do? We should work together to win this!" Kaito said with a grin.
"That's actually a good idea," murmured Meiko.
"Everyone who's in, say AYE!" Rin cried.
"AYE!!!" the six of us shouted at once.
The audition was surprisingly easy. We had to sing a song that had music to it, and then we all had to dance to the same song together. The six of us danced in a group, enjoying ourselves and moving to the beat.
At the end, the head judge stood. "We enjoyed everyone's effort today, but sadly we can only choose six of you." He took a deep breath.
Kaito squealed and fist-pumped.
"Meiko. No last name given."
Meiko grinned and elbowed Kaito.
Tears of joy welled up in Luka's eyes.
"Rin and Len Kagamine."
Rin and Len high-fived. I felt my heart sink.
"And, our final pick...Hatsune Miku."
I blinked, dizzy, and felt the world go black. The last thing I heard was Kaito's shriek.
When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw were Kaito's soft blue orbs. "Oh God, Miku, you nearly scared us to death..." he sighed. Standing on his feet, he pulled me up beside him.
-----3 years later-----
The six of us had become great friends by now. However, I noticed a lot of changes.
During the first year, Meiko was the most popular. That didn't mean the rest of us got no promotions, though. During the second year, Kaito and I were the most popular. But then, in the third year, my popularity skyrocketed. I was always the center of attention, the face of Vocaloid. I enjoyed it a lot.
But then, I noticed something else. The others didn't get much attention, except for Rin and Len who were often by my side. The fans began to hate on Meiko for stupid reasons. They ignored Luka, as if she wasn't one of us. It wasn't fair. I was the only one in the spotlight.
I knew I couldn't change how our concerts went, so I decided to try and change things some other way. I encouraged Meiko and Luka to perform in other places.
Nothing we did was good enough, though. I felt terrible.
At least we still had each other...
